Smog and Soot

Editorial Policy

Smogandsoot publishes reference material and reporting on pollution and its impacts, with a focus on Asia. The subject is defined as the pollutant and the city breathing or drinking it. The site will publish factual information across its core sections: Air, Water, Waste, Soil & chemicals, Health & policy, News, Reducing your exposure, Who is responsible, Data and monitoring, and Noise and light. It will not publish content related to betting, invented quotes, or unverified details about a person’s private life. It will not present health, legal or financial advice as instruction.

The site maintains a clear separation between reference material and reporting. Reference pages, such as City profiles or Pollutant guides, are built from verified data and established facts, presented in a neutral, encyclopaedic style. Reporting, found primarily in the News section, covers current events and developments, clearly sourced and dated. Any claims that cannot be independently verified are either excluded or explicitly labelled as unverified assertions.

All images used on smogandsoot are real photographs or accurate diagrams. Where a photograph credit exists, it is displayed. The site will never publish a picture of a real person's face generated by software or artificial intelligence. Graphics are used only to clarify data or illustrate non-human subjects.

Readers who wish to suggest a correction, provide a verifiable data source, or make an editorial enquiry can write to the editors. Contact details for the appropriate department are provided on the site’s contact page. The editors review all substantive communications but cannot respond to every submission.
