India's diverse bat species play vital roles in pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal, yet face declining populations due to habitat loss, persecution, and wind turbine collisions. With only six species legally protected, conservation efforts remain inadequate.

India is home to roughly 135 bat species, representing about 10% of global diversity. These nocturnal mammals, the world’s only true flying mammals, exhibit remarkable adaptability, thriving across diverse habitats-from the Western Ghats to urban landscapes. Their ecological contributions are vast, from controlling insect populations to pollinating plants and dispersing seeds. Yet, despite their importance, bats remain among India’s least protected wildlife, with only six species listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act. ## Ecological Roles and Diversity Bats in India fulfill critical ecosystem services. Insectivorous species, such as the critically endangered Kolar roundleaf bat (*Hipposideros hypophyllus*), prey on pests like mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as dengue and malaria. Meanwhile, nectar- and fruit-feeding bats aid in pollination and seed dispersal, while their guano enriches soil nutrients. The Western Ghats alone host 63 species, including the rare Wroughton’s free-tailed bat (*Otomops wroughtoni*), while the Western Himalayas are home to 53 species, including the recently recorded East Asian free-tailed bat (*Tadarida insignis*). Some species showcase striking adaptations. The Indian flying fox (*Pteropus giganteus*), India’s largest bat with a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters, relies on sight and smell rather than echolocation. In contrast, the palm-sized painted bat (*Kerivoula picta*), with its bright orange fur and black wings, faces threats from illegal wildlife trade. ## Threats and Conservation Challenges Despite their ecological value, bats face numerous threats. Habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural expansion, destruction of roosting sites in caves and heritage buildings, and persecution fueled by myths and disease fears contribute to their decline. Additionally, collisions with wind turbines pose an emerging risk. According to Bat Conservation International, only 23% of the 122 Indian bat species assessed by the IUCN have stable populations, with the rest in decline. Agroecologist Iqbal Bhalla, in a 2023 Mongabay-India story, emphasized the importance of bats in agriculture, stating, "There is no doubt that bats are incredibly important to agricultural landscapes. I hope that in the next few years we can get to a more definite answer as to exactly what their economic value is in Indian agriculture." Efforts to protect bats remain insufficient, with only a fraction of species receiving legal safeguards. Conservation initiatives must address habitat preservation, public awareness, and mitigation of human-wildlife conflicts to ensure the survival of these vital yet vulnerable creatures.
