Delhi hit-and-run victim's family alleges

Delhi police changed the investigating officer for a fatal hit-and-run case on Sunday. The move followed protests from the victim's family, who alleged police inaction and a delayed emergency response that may have cost a life.

Jatin Khanna, a 35-year-old local singer, was killed on August 2. He was returning home to Uttam Nagar on his motorcycle near the Mukundpur flyover in northwest Delhi when an unknown vehicle hit him. The driver fled. Police stated they reached the spot within 7-8 minutes and rushed Khanna to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Family alleges critical delay

Khanna's brother, Rohit, contested the police timeline. He said the accident happened at 4 am. "When we reached the spot, we could see him alive but unconscious," Rohit alleged. Police were present, but the investigating officer insisted only an ambulance could transport him. That ambulance, according to Rohit, arrived 20 to 30 minutes later. "My brother died," he stated.

The family also accused police of a lethargic investigation. "When we asked about the accused, police said they haven't identified him," Rohit said. He noted five CCTV cameras are at the location and that the family had spoken to eyewitnesses. Yet, he claimed, the investigating officer refused to record their statements. "It's been almost a month now. We want answers."

Khanna's wife, Navya, posed direct questions. "Why did police not allow my brother-in-law to rush him to hospital? Why can't they show us the CCTV footage?"

Police response and new probe

Assistant Commissioner of Police for Jahangirpuri, Yogendra Khokhar, addressed the allegations. He told mediapersons the investigating officer was changed due to the family's concerns. Efforts to trace the accused are underway, he said.

"We have received their complaint," ACP Khokhar stated, according to the Hindustan Times report. "They are not satisfied with the probe and also levelled allegations against the IO." The statement confirms the change but does not directly address the specific claims about the ambulance delay or the handling of CCTV evidence.

The case remains open. A singer is dead. A vehicle is missing. A family waits.
